Abstract

The Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program, introduced by Indonesia’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, represents a significant transformation in higher education by emphasizing student autonomy, experiential learning, and curriculum flexibility. This research aimed to investigate the implementation of MBKM within the English Language Teaching Department at Institut Prima Bangsa Cirebon. The study explored how lecturers and students perceived the program, identified the benefits and challenges faced during its execution, and examined its implications for English language teaching practices. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through interviews with lecturers and questionnaires distributed to students, which were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed that lecturers and students generally held positive attitudes toward MBKM, recognizing its contributions to fostering creativity, collaboration, and practical learning experiences. However, several challenges were identified, including limited institutional readiness, insufficient facilities, and a lack of technical guidance in curriculum alignment. The results suggest that MBKM has the potential to enhance both pedagogical effectiveness and student engagement when implemented with proper institutional support and professional development. This study contributes to the growing body of literature on curriculum reform in Indonesian higher education, particularly within the field of English language education, and provides recommendations for optimizing MBKM implementation across departments.
